  • How can social content reporting support a real marketing decision?
  • What can engagement, journey identifiers and attribution tell you—and what can they not prove?

Start with the decision the report must support

An Egyptian service business should not ask one social metric to answer every commercial question. Reach can describe distribution, an enquiry can indicate a request for contact, and a sales-accepted lead can show that a conversation meets agreed conditions. These are different stages, not interchangeable names for success.

Before building a dashboard, agree which decision the team will make from each measure. A distribution problem may require changing the topic or format. Many enquiries with poor fit may require clearer service boundaries. Accepted leads without timely follow-up may reveal an operational issue rather than a content problem.

Define three layers without hiding their limits

At the exposure layer, report platform reach and engagement using the platform's definitions. Do not sum reach across platforms and label the result unique people: audiences can overlap. Note the reporting period and whether paid distribution is included.

At the enquiry layer, define the actions that count, such as a submitted service form or a direct request for a consultation. Keep duplicate submissions, job applications and supplier pitches separate. A click to contact is not necessarily a completed conversation.

At the accepted-lead layer, agree fit criteria and a named sales owner. Acceptance might require an in-scope need and sufficient information for a relevant response. Record rejection reasons and pending reviews rather than silently treating every unreviewed enquiry as poor quality.

Connect the journey with consistent identifiers

Use a documented campaign-link convention. Google's URL builder guidance explains campaign parameters, including source, medium, campaign and content, and notes that values are case-sensitive. Inconsistent capitalization can split what the team intended as one reporting category.

Keep personal information out of campaign labels. Where available and appropriate, connect a captured campaign reference to the enquiry record, then preserve the sales status separately. Test whether links, forms and reporting fields work together before interpreting a blank source as direct demand.

The UTM naming governance guide can support this operational work. Treat missing or incomplete journeys as a reporting limitation, not permission to fill in a preferred channel.

Complete an unfilled theme-review worksheet

Record the actual theme, intended reader question, publication period, paid support, exposure measures, linked enquiries and review status. Keep quantities blank until their sources are reconciled. Separate attention from commercial suitability so broad distribution does not become an automatic instruction to repeat a theme.

For each linked enquiry, retain the approved fit decision and any unresolved review. Compare themes only after checking timing, audience, paid support and duplicate treatment. Sales feedback should identify the question or scope mismatch, not merely classify a topic as good or bad. Unlinked conversations remain unattributed unless evidence supports the connection.

Use the review to propose a specific editorial change: clarify eligibility, improve an explanation or provide missing preparation information. Record its rationale, owner and next observation point. Continue tracking the relevant signals without claiming causation from an observational comparison. A completed review produces a documented content decision, not a fabricated revenue result.

Explain attribution without promising causality

Google's attribution guidance concerns assigning credit to observed touchpoints. Credit is not proof that content caused an enquiry or that the enquiry would disappear without it. People may return through another device, share a post privately or encounter several channels before contacting sales.

Include an optional, consistently recorded self-reported discovery question, but recognize that memory is imperfect. Show tracked source, self-reported source and unknown source as distinct information where useful.

Common mistakes are reporting clicks as leads, ignoring sales review delays and presenting attributed pipeline as incremental revenue. Use the marketing dashboard framework to connect each finding to an owner and action. Contact Kitely to define a content measurement plan that marketing and sales can both maintain.
